Metacritic’s top 10 rated 2023 games include remakes/remasters, with the exception of one
Metacritics’ ‘Top 10 Most Popular Videogames of 2023’ reports that nine of the ten most-rated games currently on the platform are remakes or new remasters. Only one of these is a 100% original creation.
The critically-acclaimed Metroid Prime Remastered is at the top of this list, taking the number one spot. Close behind is The Witcher 3 Complete Edition and Resident Evil 4, which each own three spots on the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X versions.
The list continues to include Persona 4 and Persona Effect: Connected. Also, there are the Dead Space remake and Hi-Fi Rush, which were both awarded two spots on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X ports.
Remakes and remasters dominate the market for new releases. There’s more coming with games like Advance Wars 2+2: Reboot Camp and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, as well as the Silent Hill II remake.
Some may feel that new releases lack originality. However, many studios are retreading old ground or bringing back a series or game, so it’s hard to argue with a lack of quality. Resident Evil 4 is already the most-rated game of the year, and it’s not even released yet!
With big new releases like Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Starfield and Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on the horizon, the balance could shift in favor of original releases.
